Whole Foods Market, Kensington case study

Whole Foods Market, the premier multi-national natural and organic supermarket approached us to update the ground floor signage of their flagship UK store in Kensington.

Shapes, 3D painted letters, matt and gloss finishes.

Having worked with Whole Foods Market for a number of years on various projects, we knew that the design and installation of their new signage for Kensington would need to look pristine and be beautifully crafted.

After receiving the brief from the client’s design agency Thread Collaborative, we surveyed the site to confirm all dimensions but due to the age of the building we returned again to double check and this really paid off.

The initial brief for all the lettering and lines was 3D painted letters and lines, all painted to match Little Greene paint colours. We recommended using clear acrylic for this as we could get an excellent paint finish on this material in both gloss and matt finish, and we did. The lines were 15mm and the letters were 25mm thick.

The art deco line detail was originally taken from the steel bannisters on the 1st floor. These acrylic lines were finished in gloss to stand out on the matt painted walls just like a UV varnish on printed brochures. The lettering was finished in matt.

The shapes behind the letters were all done by hand using Little Greene matt paint. These were done after we drilled the locator positions on the template drawing. It saved time to do it this way as the drawings were big!

Our installation was all out of hours with a start time of 9.30pm and finishing time of 4.30am – an hour after the in-house bakers had arrived!

We worked for 11 nights in the best environment, warm, dry and listening to lovely Christmas music, completing the project on 11th December. The installation for Whole Foods Market, Kensington was completed on time and without any issues.

At the end of this project created the O & M manual – a document highlighting specs, sizes, colours and final results as a project overview.
